The Young Advocates is a leadership program for young adults ages 18-25 who are interested in public health advocacy. Young Advocates gain meaningful experience preventing binge and underage drinking and other alcohol-related harms. They promote health-affirming strategies and neighborhood vitality by assisting with regional projects. Young Advocates also push forth public health advocacy efforts through policy research and strategy development. Their work consistently addresses and influences best practices by alcohol retailers, social environments, and social norms surrounding alcohol. IPS welcomes Young Advocates with diverse backgrounds and experiences, such as those with lived experiences related to alcohol harms and those from different cultural backgrounds and skill sets. Those with public health policy experience, social media and public health messaging, and who are fluent in additional languages beyond English are encouraged to apply.

As a member of our Young Advocates program, you will create lasting change in communities by reducing alcohol-related harms and encouraging best practices supporting community health. The goal of the Binge and Underage Drinking Initiative (BUDI) is to address the harmful effects of underage and high-risk drinking behaviors by changing community policies, practices, and norms related to excessive alcohol consumption.
As a Young Advocate, you may engage in:
- Assisting in designing and delivering presentations on prevention methods for alcohol misuse.
- Assisting with collecting quantitative and qualitative data through surveys, risk assessments, and undercover assessments.
- Helping with data cleaning for geographic information system (GIS) mapping.
- Assisting with public health messaging through researching and designing social media campaigns.
- Helping with outreach and staffing resource tables at community engagement events.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Capable of working both in person and virtually.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Available to work in the Central, East, or South Regions of San Diego.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Available for at least one semester/quarter.
- Commit to 8 hours per week.
