The San Diego County Binge and Underage Drinking Initiative (BUDI) is Reimagining our Communities, free from alcohol-related harms. BUDI is part of a comprehensive countywide prevention system that utilizes community-based, environmental strategies to address the underlying causes of substance misuse and substance use disorders.
The BUDI engages all aspects of the community and key stakeholders to establish or change written and unwritten community standards, codes and attitudes that influence the prevalence of underage and high-risk drinking and other harms to communities and neighborhoods.
The BUDI addresses the social, cultural, political, economic, and community conditions that influence when, where, and how underage and high-risk drinking occur to prevent problems by addressing root causes.
The BUDI coordinates strategic prevention campaigns on an annual basis to reduce underage and high-risk drinking by changing community policies, practices, and norms regarding alcohol over-consumption countywide. These multi-faceted campaigns integrate public health messaging, social media, the latest research and data, community engagement, and sustainable solutions.
The Institute for Public Strategies facilitates the BUDI, providing capacity building opportunities and promoting collaborative planning among prevention service providers.
